The Kano State Hisbah Board said it had arrested no fewer than 105 beggars in Kano metropolis in February for allegedly violating the law banning street begging.

Malam Dahiru Nuhu, the Officer in charge of the board’s anti-begging unit, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Wednesday.

Nuhu said that 35 of the suspects arrested during different raids in the metropolis are children and 60 adults.

He said the arrests were carried out in areas around motor parks and hospitals.

According to the Hisbah official, some of the suspects who were first time offenders were released after stern warning by the officers of the board while those who were not first-time offenders were taken to court.

He disclosed that 10 missing street urchins (almajiris) between the ages of seven and 10 were brought by good Samaritans for safe return to their various schools.

Nuhu urged people to shun begging and learn to use their hands for productive ventures to better their lives.

Newsmen report that violation of the law banning street begging in the state attracts a minimum of three months jail term.
