Nigerians purchased foreign flight tickets worth $1.4 billion 2017

In 2017, despite the economic recession, Nigerians were found to have spent a large amount of money on purchasing flight tickets.

The president of the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA), Mr. Bankole Bernard, revealed on Saturday, January 27, 2018, that flight tickets worth $1.4 billion (N50 billion) were purchased by travelers who moved out of the country with foreign airlines in the year 2017.

According to Bernard, foreign airlines that had previously cut back their operations and reduced their frequencies due to low passenger traffic in the country as a result of the recession have since increased their capacity.

He also said it was high time the federal government reviewed its Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) in a way that it would also protect the interest of domestic airlines, adding that other countries introduced policies that encourage and protect their own local carriers.

He also hinted that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will soon introduce a new system for financial settlement by travel agents to replace the Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) introduced in Nigeria in 2008.

According to him, while this move would help to prevent non-professionals and touts from masquerading as travel agents, the association has decided to introduce identity card with electronic chips that would be used to separate the real practitioners from interlopers who are largely responsible for many frauds recorded in the sub-sector.

"We, at NANTA, will be delighted to see the ID Scheme come to reality when it's launched in March for NANTA approved and NCAA (the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority) endorsed operators only. This would not only change the perception of the general public but give a sense of belonging to the practitioners within the industry and be seen as true professionals that we are, which will automatically eliminate fraudsters,” he said.

"The immediate and future gains of this scheme are numerous and in due course, we shall unveil this strategic security product that will question and check the prowling of our business lines by fake and fly-by-night operators. Let me state earnestly that with this card, which has the backing of government aviation regulatory agencies, the days of spoilers in our midst are over."

He also revealed that the association will soon have the NANTA Act, which would give legislative backing to the body.

With how inevitable it is to get eyebags, it’s necessary to know a few skills to get rid of them.

With how inevitable it is to get eye bags, it’s necessary to know a few skills to get rid of them.

We can all get caught in life and neglect to get enough sleep or rest which results in eye bags that we try to quickly get rid of.

No one wants to walk around with eye bags as telltale signs of stress and exhaustion so here are 3 way you can get rid of them. They are inexpensive and most of the things are easily accessible.

1. Ice Cubes

It has been proven over time that ice cubes work to relieve tired looking eye bags in a matter of minutes. Lay down and placing the ice cubes over the eyes especially placing the ice cubes on the area where there are bags. Do this for as long as you can bear at a time then continue till you get the desired result.

2. Soaked tea bags

Although hard to believe, tea can also be used for external purposes. Especially caffeinated tea, which contains natural tannins which is a mild diuretic. Soak two tea bags in warm water, and then chill the bags for a few minutes in the refrigerator. Place one tea bag on each eye for five minutes.

3. Slices of cucumbers

This vegetable is very useful and healthy especially for getting rid of eye bags. When your eyes are red and puffy, cut a couple slices of cold cucumber, lie down, and put a slice over each eye for 30 minutes. Once you’re up, your eyes will be brighter and your body refreshed.

While many people use energy drinks as a supplement for rigorous workouts or to have a boost of energy, there are dangers from consuming it.

While many people use energy drinks as a supplement for rigorous workouts or to have a boost of energy, there are dangers from consuming it.

Energy drinks often advertise an increased level of alertness, assistance with workouts and recovery or an added boost needed during the day but there are reasons why energy drinks shouldn't be consumed.

Although these drinks are advertised as giving an added boost and alertness, none of these claims have been supported by any medical or pharmaceutical companies. Instead, they have been found to be more hazardous than helpful especially as the higher the amount consumed, the higher the risks.

1. They contain taurine which may be toxic

Taurine is a popular ingredient in energy drinks. It is an amino acid that supports neurological development and helps regulate the level of water and mineral salts in the blood. Although the actual side effects are unknown, it is not recommended to intake more than 3,000 mg a day.

Drinking energy drinks throughout the day can easily exceed this limit and put a strain on the kidneys as they filter this supplement.

2. Energy drinks have a large amount of caffeine

Energy drinks contain a large amount of caffeine that can increase heart rate, which over time can increase the risk stroke and heart disease. Overconsumption of drinking energy drinks and caffeine can also lead to nervousness, irritability, headaches, nausea, and sleeplessness.

3. High sugar content

Energy drinks have a large amount of sugar that can lead to weight gain. Mayo Clinic explains that this is especially true for people who drink energy drinks, struggle with their weight and don't exercise regularly.

4. Energy drinks cause dehydration

Energy drinks themselves can be dehydrating, and often people replace drinking water with the drinks. Dehydration can lead to muscle soreness, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. It is important to drink extra water if energy drinks are being taken.

Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey made her move to the WWE official on Sunday after months of speculation.

  • Former UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has signed with WWE.
  • The news comes after Rousey made a surprise at the end of the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia on Sunday night.
  • Rousey seems to be all-in on her future with the company, calling her WWE career "First priority on my timeline for the next several years."

Former UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has signed with WWE, making her entrance into the world of professional wrestling after months of speculation.

Rousey surprised the WWE universe on Sunday night in Philadelphia, emerging from backstage moments after the end of the first ever women's Royal Rumble match.

As the match concluded, Asuka — the winner of the inaugural women's Rumble — stood in the center of the ring eyeing up champions Charlotte and Alexa Bliss and debating which of them she could potentially challenge at WrestleMania. Moments later, the arena began blasting Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" as Rousey's name appeared across the jumbotron, earning cheers from the crowd as she joined the trio of women in the ring.

Rousey pointed at the WrestleMania sign that hung above the ring, and attempted to shake Asuka's hand, but Asuka pulled away from her in a mocking fashion. From there she exited the ring and met with Stephanie McMahon, onscreen commissioner of "Monday Night Raw," and shook hands.

While speaking with ESPN about her decision to move to WWE, Rousey indicated that signing with the company was no short-sighted matter, and that she intended to compete in the world of wrestling for some time.

"This is my life now. First priority on my timeline for the next several years. This is not a smash-and-grab; this is not a publicity stunt," Rousey told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. "When I first met with Triple H, I told him, 'There are other things I can do with my time that'll make way more money, but I won't enjoy nearly as much.'"

Rousey's entrance wasn't a total shock to fans of WWE — she appeared at WrestleMania 31 alongside The Rock to face down Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, and had even been one of the betting favorites to show up as a surprise entrant and win the women's Royal Rumble. But even with speculation that more WWE action was in her near future, no one could be sure if it would be a one-off appearance or if she planned to come on to the roster full-time.

We don't yet know how Rousey will be in the ring, but stars like Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and Shayna Baszler of NXT >have shown that the transition can be made with amazing results. Chances are we'll learn more about Rousey's immediate future in the WWE, such as her first match and opponent, on "Monday Night Raw" this week.

Known to some as the "belfie queen," she has 11.7 million Instagram followers.

  • Fitness influencer Jennifer Selter, known by some of fans as the "belfie queen," has 11.7 million Instagram followers.
  • She was kicked off a New York-bound American Airlines plane after a row erupted with cabin crew.
  • Instagram star shared a series of videos of the ordeal on Twitter.

With 11.7 million Instagram fans, 24-year-old fitness influencer Jennifer Selter from Long Island has amassed a huge social media following and was recently named the second most influential fitness star in the world by Forbes.

Alongside snaps of her workouts, Selter is known for sharing bikini-clad photos of her rear, which has earned her the title "belfie queen" by some fans.

But it appears she was not able to use her influence to diffuse a hostile situation aboard a New York-bound American Airlines plane while travelling with her sister at the weekend, upon which a big argument with cabin crew errupted.

On Saturday, Selter shared this video on Twitter in which a row appears to break out with cabin crew after she gets out of her seat on board the plane headed for her hometown of New York.

In the video, Selter says the plane has been sat on the tarmac for over two hours. She has since said that she only stood up to stretch and put her jacket away.

In the footage a fellow passenger interjects and appears to try and defend the Instagram star to airline staff.

Things appear to escalate, though, as Selter then posted a video showing police officers aboard the plane, who appear to have come to remove her.

"Just like that, 5 cops coming at me. Worst experience American Air," she captioned the post. One of the officers can be heard saying: "American Airlines calls the shots. They don’t want you to fly on their plane today."

She shared a video having left the plane, captioned: "I did nothing wrong but got kicked off the plane."

Selter posted another video of a passenger, who she says also left the aircraft following the blogger's mistreatment by cabin crew.

"Here is a video of an innocent passenger who on her own decided to get off the plane based on how badly @AmericanAir treated us all," she said. "The girl in the video says that the cabin crew were shouting and harassing her after her and her sister got up to go to the bathroom."

According to Page Six, Selter said of the experience: "It was humiliating. They made me feel like a terrible person, and I did nothing wrong."

"I will never ever fly American Airlines again," she added. "I’ve seen cops come onto flights. But they shouldn’t kick people off unless something is actually dangerous."

Stop! Don't go to Cape Town

There's a water crisis in this coastal city and officials are concerned they would run out of water on April 29, 2018.

The beautiful coastal city of Cape Town is currently dealing with a drought that has hit critical levels.

There's a water crisis in this coastal city and officials are concerned they would run out of water in April 2018.

Unseasonably dry winters have caused the dams in South Africa to become dangerously low, resulting in the dams hovering around 33% capacity as of mid-December according to South African officials.

Once the dams drop below 13.5% capacity taps in South Africa will be turned off. The projected date for “Day Zero” is projected to be April 29, 2018, based on current water consumption behaviour and anticipated rainfall. Once taps are turned off, residents will have to have to go to one of 200 checkpoints to receive daily water rations.

Although officials still encourage tourism, the city is hoping to spread the word about the water crisis to encourage travellers to be responsible. Visitors don’t have a major impact on the city’s water consumption, but Cape Town’s travel industry has made a point to inform visitors of the crisis with many hotels installing water-saving shower heads, eliminating daily linen changes, offering timers to help guests remember to take short showers.

Residents are currently allotted 23 gallons of water per person each day as the city tries to find alternatives.

Cape Town residents are also asked to keep showers to two minutes, use hand sanitizer instead of water, refrain from watering lawns and to avoid flushing toilets on a regular basis.

As a young lady who wants to experiment, a major failure like this might put an end to 'future experimentation'

My night of wild sex ended because of a micro-penis and a bruised ego. On my way home on the train, it was me and my burning thighs.

It was my best friend's house party, celebrating her 20th. Few friends from uni and people I didn't know showed up at the party. I got drunk because I didn't know many people, it makes it easy to talk to people when I’m buzzed.

I met a guy and his friend, the guy I met ,A(Let’s call him that) was really good looking and nice.

We got along really nice, his friend, T was there, we were all chatting but I was more interested in A.

As the night went on, people start leaving, the party starts dwindling down. I and A go to bedroom, and his friend T follows, quite unusual but what the heck.

ALSO READ: He advertised it as plantain to me, he showed up with an inhaler, oh my geezus!

A and I started making out, and I was sure I was gonna sleep with him. All of a sudden I feel a hand on my legs, and i know it isn't A's hand. Definitely T's, I pulled away and looked at them, and then I knew that they were into this sort of thing. I was drunk and in the mood, I didn’t object. Clearly, it was a threesome, and that’s how they roll.

I was young,  and wanted to do it for the first time, a threesome. I and A start having sex and it was really good. It was so good that I forgot that T was still in the room, then A gets off me, and his friend, T starts to get undressed. At this point, I get excited, and when he takes off his clothes, I was disappointed, his penis was like a mini-sausage.

Seeing his dick, I didn't want to do again but mama didn't raise no fool. I'm a woman of my words, so I give go ahead. I was gonna say he put it into me but there was nothing to put. He starts thrusting, after a few minutes, I start to feel pain on my thighs, and I realised that Mr. Little Dick was trying to overcompensate with his thrusts, and my thighs were getting bruised AF.

I put my hand on his chest to hint him to slow down, at this point A (Mr. Good dick) comes back into view, I push off T, change positions because the thighs are out of order and then continue with A. T then comes around to put his penis the size of a toe into my mouth. I then screamed

"Could you please leave us alone!"

Everybody stops, T then realises everything is awful then he begins to put on his clothes, as he is about to leave the room , he then turns around and tells his friend,

"Aint you coming" Then deafening silence falls across the room.

ALSO READ: The sex was like Namadi Sambo’s vice presidency, boring and uneventful, Jesus?! Who send me sef?

We look at eachother, A and I. A then gets up, apologising that he has to go, dressed up and left the room. I couldn't go downstairs for a while but by the time I went downstairs, they were both gone.

And that's how my night of wild sex ended because of a micro-penis and a bruised ego. On my way home on the train, it was me and my burning thighs.

“One shocking truth we have discovered is that people don’t know how to use their mobile phones." - Jason Njoku

The inaugural edition of the start-up pitch competition Techpoint Build held on Saturday at the Landmark Event centre.

The much anticipated event had thousands of entrepreneurs and technology stakeholder from all over Nigeria, gathered together to network and learn.

Internship classifieds site Placements.ng vied with eight other start-ups and won the N1 million prize competition. There were also breakout panel sessions primarily around funding - is it right to take investor money early on; investments in Africa, etc.

Below are wise nuggets from the sessions

Quotes

"I don't believe in smart money. I believe in fast money. Collect from the investor who gives first, and with clear terms. No complexities. If a lawyer is needed to understand their proposal, I'd ignore." - Shola Akinlade (CEO, Paystack)

"We did 98 different pitches, tweaking the business model and value ad with each, before finally attracting investment from Techstars. You have to do the work." - Onyeka Akumah (CEO, Farmcrowdy)

If you have a brilliant idea in an untested territory, don't bootstrap to prove the concept, because if you eventually do, then vultures who can raise more and market more than you, will duplicate your idea and take market lead. So, see to it that you get funding in that scenario, so you can grow aggressively before second movers catch up.” - Onyeka Akumah (CEO, Farmcrowdy)

One shocking truth we have discovered is that people don’t know how to use their mobile phones. So we rolled out market education through physical outlets where salesmen collect your phone, help you download the iROKO app and sign in.” - Jason Njoku (CEO, iROKOtv)

I used to be all techy before until one day I was on Adeola Odeku and this big man steps out of his exotic car with two expensive mobile phones asking me for directions to a nearby street. I thought to myself, “this rich man has Google products on his phones that can direct him yet he can’t or wouldn’t use it?” - Simeon Ononobi (CEO, SimplePay)

Chika, are you looking to take bets on small startups now as you did with Jobberman back then?

No. They are hell (laughs). There's not so much capital, resources and time so I have to focus on the portfolio I currently have and guard against spreading myself too thin. But I can work with credible investors playing at that seed phase.” - Chika Nwobi (founder, L5Lab)

Startups need to look more at substituting investments for partners who have access to market or other things they need. A lot of conventional people have made money in this clime through partnerships and without raising money. That's how I started in business at Mtech. We approached MTN that had millions of subscribers and said, look let's partner and share earnings and that's how we got millions of customers.” - Chika Nwobi (founder, L5Lab)

However the Serbian was pleased with the competition, as it offered his home based players necessary exerience.

"The tournament provides us with a lot of experience which will help us going forward because this is a tournament that gives great experience to our players." He said

"I'm happy with my performance and having Gernot Rohr here watching, I believe that will help me with the senior national team." He said

He however praised the teams performance as they pushed for victory during extra time,

He said "I have to thank the team especially the coach who was very calm in the technical area pushing the team and believing that we will get the win. The performance was great because we continued to push and tried to get the goal after going down and we did just that in the last minute."

Farmcrowdy is making Agriculture a good business for all

According to the company, it is a win-win situation for all - farmers, sponsors, people and the company.

Farmcrowdy is an agricultural startup which connects small-scale farmers with needed help by making Nigerians to sponsor their farming activities.

These sponsors earn a return on their money after completion of the farming cycle. To all parties involve, it is a win-win situation for all.

The CEO and co-founder of Farmcrowdy, Mr Onyeka Akumah explained more about the company's mission during an interview with Business Insider Sub-Sahara Africa.

Mr Onyeka said the mission of the company is to improve living conditions of small-scale farmers in Africa by involving everybody. More so, he said this will translate to solving the food security problems in the continent.

“Farmcrowdy is a digital agricultural platform that connects sponsors – investors, with small-scale farmers to boost food production in Africa. We, Farmcrowdy, have identified that they are over 38 million small-scale farmers that are mostly unbanked and find it difficult to securing access loans that they need to expand their farming activities.”

“Even when they get the loans, many of them don’t know the right market to sell their farm produce to earn a decent income from farming as a business.”

“So, we set up Farmcrowdy to connect these individuals with sponsors who are excited about impacting on the lives of the farmers. These sponsors also earn returns at harvest when the food cycle is completed.”

Access to finance and poor knowledge of modern agricultural practices are the bane of small-scale farmers in Nigeria. And these farmers constitute over 90 percent of players in the crop production segment of the industry.

Considering these problems, Mr Onyeka said: “To farmers, Farmcrowdy is the bridge to funds and resources they need. We don’t just give the resources they need, we also mentor and guide them."

"We train them on what they need to do to improve quality of output. This is done through both class and field training on modern agricultural practices.”

The company also hinted at how to solve access to the market problem for these farmers. In most cases, getting the farm produce to the market is a daunting task for farmers.

“We also connect the farmers to the right market by sourcing for them processors or off-takers as we like to call them. These off-takers buy their harvest and make available profits for the farmers to get a decent living from farming as a business.”

This, Onyeka noted, has endeared the company to the hearts of farmers who see them as ‘saviour’ and ‘helper’. However, the company and sponsors make income through commission on these sales.

“The most important thing is that the farmers have now found a way to connect with willing individuals, through a shared economy. These individuals invest and sponsor their activities and grow their capacity to earn more,” he said.

As at January 25, 2018, Farmcrowdy has its operations in 8 of the 36 states (25 percent national coverage) in Nigeria. It is currently farming on 1000 hectares with engagement of over 5000 farmers.

2. Viewers can win the Head of House chair and one million naira weekly

Big Brother is giving all the viewers an opportunity to win the HOH chair and a million Naira every week.

Also, viewers can participate on the show through the Big Brother secret task, which allows them to conspire with Big Brother and give the Housemates Secret Tasks every week.

3. There's a telephone in the house

For the first time, there's a telephone in the house, and it will only ring on Big Brother's command.

After Big Brother has chosen the best task suggested by viewers, he delivers the news to the housemates through the house phone.

Only one housemate can answer the phone at a time but, the housemates may collectively decide to refrain from answering at all.

4. Diversity in selection process

The housemates were divided and introduced in groups such as: the intellectuals, the entrepreneurs, the first timers, and the entertainers.

This new season comes with a variety that promises to be exciting.

You can meet the 20 Big Brother Naija housemates here.

5. The meaning of the "Double Wahala" theme

Just as the title implies, there would be double entertainment, double wahala, and double eviction.

The housemates will be paired, and this means that if one housemate gets evicted, his or her partner leaves too. If a housemate gets a reward or punishment, the partner will also be at the receiving end.

The third season of Big Brother Naija show, which kicked off on January 28, 2018, will run for 85 days.

Party's ex presidential candidate apologises to Nigerians

KOWA presidential candidate apologises to Nigerians, says the old has failed the young

Prof Oluremi Sonaiya who was presidential candidate of KOWA political party during the 2015 general elections, has tendered an unreserved apology to Nigerians.

Sonaiya was speaking in the wake of the Osun local government elections which saw the governing APC sweep every poll and council in sight.

The PDP reportedly boycotted the vote and smaller political parties like KOWA were not even at the races.

Apology

“Good day. We owe the public an explanation and apologies on the Osun State LG election. In promoting leadership by younger people, the risk of mistakes due to lack of experience is high. Means we need closer supervision. This has cost us a lot, but we're learning. We are sorry”, Sonaiya tweeted.

Local government elections in Nigeria are often treated with apathy; with the third tier only managing to stay afloat thanks to paltry allocations from the center.

The couple only had three weeks to their wedding before the groom caught his wife-to-be in bed with his best man.

A narrator on Twitter expressed in a series of tweets the circumstance of her friend who was betrayed by his wife-to-be.

In just about three weeks to his wedding, an unidentified man reportedly caught his best man in bed with his bride, leaving him in a distraught state following the discovery.

This came after intense rumours linking the trusted pair to an affair.

According to a Twitter user, Mother Confessor, a close friend of the groom raised suspicion concerning the betrayers, who had been sleeping with each other long before they were caught.

The husband-to-be, who was in Abuja prior to the event decided to make a trip down to Lagos to confirm what he had heard about concerning his best friend and prospective wife.

His visit proved to be a disappointment - certainly not what he had hoped for when he walked into a bed room and found the duo curled up in an embrace.

Mother Confessor who described herself as a friend of the heartbroken man posed a question on Twitter to help the latter in a decision regarding how to deal with the issue.

“What will u do if u find out your fiance/fiancée is cheating on u with d bridesmaid/best man 3 weeks to your wedding?," she asked.

"They've been dating for over 5 years & got engaged last year and the wedding is supposed to happen in 3 weeks.

"He love this babe so much, he's done stuff for her, he treated her like a Queen and respect her most times when she comes around to his place.

"His friends are around after work.. He introduced her to one of them who is his best friend years ago and not best man but I guess they went behind his back and took the introduction to another level although he said he was suspecting the closeness.

"But he thought he was just paranoid and didn't think a thing like that could happen between them because he trust both of them but for years they've been doing stuff behind his back. They all hang out, eat together and gist but nothing prepared him for this.

"He traveled few days ago and was supposed to come back Thursday but 4 days ago, another friend called him to inform him that something is not right with his bride to be and his best man that he is only telling him cos he feels it's d right thing to do.

"My friend thought dis guy who told him stuff was just one of those bad Belle people who don't want u to settle down he kept thinking about it but didn't tell anyone.

"So yesterday he decided to leave Abuja for Lagos but didn't tell anyone he had changed his plan.

"He cancelled his travel from Thursday (4days from now) and brought it to yesterday he arrived Lagos and went home straight but in mind he was praying that everything he heard was not true he got home (his fiancée stays with him) and used his key. He went straight to the bedroom and when he opened the door, he said he almost fainted everything was true.

"She was in bed with his best man and he said he didn't know wat to do but that if he had reacted, he would have attacked his friend because he betrayed him.

"So he said he just turned back and closed the door and left the house for them he went to his mom's house but don't know what and how to tell her what he saw.

"How do u tell your mom u saw your bride to be in bed with your best man 3 weeks to your wedding," Mother Confessor submitted a question.

The narrator expressed further preparations for the wedding had reached a finishing stage as a hall had already been secured in anticipation of the event.

According to the Twitter user, the 'bride-to-be' successfully appealed to her mother to speak with the groom on her behalf but didn't state the problem.

5 tips for planning your first trip to Africa

Africa, a continent made up of 54 countries and nine territories should be at the top of your 2018 travel list.

There is a lot of negative imagery of Africa out there, including rampant disease, starving children and “ethnic” conflict.

What the media do not share is that Europeans are still vacationing on this beautiful continent.

ALSO READ: Visit this African country relatively free of corruption

Africa, a continent made up of 54 countries and nine territories should be at the top of your 2018 travel list.

1. Take an African friend along on your next trip

Travel experiences can be enhanced when you travel with a local. Couple your tourist outings with restaurants that only locals know about. This is also a great way to get an intimate knowledge of the culture.

2. Sacrifice your comfort for the real experience.

Although many African countries have a five-star hotel, step out of your comfort zone.

No electricity for a night or two never killed anyone nor did bathing with cold water. Also, get comfortable eating with your hands and eating food you cannot entirely recognize; it might be the best thing you’ve ever tasted.

3. Don't forget to take shots!

There are certain shots that you will want to take prior to your trip. You would definitely need to take malaria prophylactics as mosquitoes are everywhere. But, these are minor hurdles that should not put you off. If you have questions about specific countries, ask someone who has been there.

4. Be respectful

Africans dress conservatively. That means women travellers may want to opt out of spaghetti crops unless they are on a hotel property, even when it is 90 degrees.

You do not want to draw any negative attention to yourself.

5. Buy clothes and jewellery

Nothing beats an authentic African masterpiece.

You can buy cheap clothes from amazing tailors. There are several different types of jewellery available in various countries. No matter where you go, stop by the market and add a piece of African jewellery to your outfit.

On a day when the warm Santa Ana winds were gusting and swirling at Torrey Pines, Tiger Woods made a move up the leaderboard during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open, as he had often done on the way to winning eight PGA Tour titles here.

This surge, however, was unexpected. Woods, 42, had arrived here with a ranking of No. 647 in the world and “tempered expectations.”

He admitted he did not know what to expect for his first PGA Tour start in a year and, more significantly, his first tour event since undergoing spinal fusion surgery in April.

So when he made the 36-hole cut, requiring a birdie on his last hole Friday to reach a tournament’s weekend for the first time since 2015, his comeback already was considered a success.

And when he overcame wildly erratic driving and posted a 2-under 70 on Saturday, moving up to 39th place, it was another step in the right direction.

Finally, on Sunday, playing in front of the largest moving galleries, as he did all tournament, he revved up his fans by making four birdies in the first 11 holes despite facing the most challenging conditions of the week. He climbed as high as 18th on the leaderboard before making two bogeys down the stretch and winding up with an even-par 72.

Woods finished the tournament with a 3-under 285, putting him in a tie for 23rd, seven shots behind leaders Jason Day, Alex Noren and Ryan Palmer, who tied at 10-under and went to a playoff. Palmer was eliminated on the first extra hole. Day and Noren played the first five playoff holes without a winner before play was suspended for darkness. They are set to resume at 11 a.m. Monday.

It was Woods’ best finish since he tied for 10th at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015, 29 months ago, and only the third time in his past 20 PGA Tour events that he played four rounds at par or better: 72-71-70-72.

“Overall, I’m very pleased,” Woods said Sunday. “After not playing for a couple of years and coming out here on tour, you know, it was a solid four days. I had to fight for every score on every hole, and sometimes those are more pleasing than boring rounds. I can grind it out with the best of them.”

His statistics gave evidence of how hard he had worked to play at or under par. On Sunday, he hit only three of 14 fairways for the third consecutive round, and he finished tied for last in driving accuracy among the 77 players who made the cut. He compensated for wayward driving with excellent chipping, putting and bunker play, making par or better on 19 holes on which he failed to reach the green at least two strokes before par.

“The short game wasn’t something I was worried about coming in this week,” he said. “I need to work on my driving. These are some of the narrowest fairways on the whole tour, so when I don’t have my best stuff, and now it’s windy, it just compounded it. It made it very difficult for me.”

Woods said he could take many positives from his first tour event since last year’s Farmers, where he missed the cut. Roughly half the 156-player field missed the cut this year, including Rickie Fowler, ranked No. 7 in the world, and 2017 Tour Championship winner Xander Schauffele, ranked 26th.

On Sunday, Woods finished ahead of No. 2 Jon Rahm, the defending champion who shot 75-77 on the weekend; No. 22 Francesco Molinari, No. 36 Patrick Cantlay and No. 46 Phil Mickelson, among others.

Next on Woods’ schedule is the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles starting Feb. 15, a tour event that benefits Woods’ foundation. He said after Sunday’s round that he was totally pain-free and would go home to “reassess where I’m at” and how he feels physically, coming off a full tournament, before announcing his schedule.

“I’m trying to build toward April,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing a full schedule and getting ready for the Masters, and I haven’t done that in a very long time.”

The 86th Street subway station in New York, Jan. 24, 2018. With the subway in precipitous decline and the city enjoying an economic boom, some policymakers think the time has come for the subway to profit from the financial benefits it provides, including its considerable contribution to property values.

Ever since August Belmont Jr. arranged the financing for a four-track “underground railroad” more than a century ago, the subway has fueled New York City’s economy, delivering workers from homes in distant neighborhoods to jobs in Manhattan and enriching landlords and real estate developers near stations.

Today, with the subway in precipitous decline and the city enjoying an economic boom, some policymakers think the time has come for the subway to profit from the financial benefits it provides, including its considerable contribution to property values.

Proponents point to the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where co-op and condominium prices in a 10-block stretch near the Second Avenue subway have risen 6 percent since it opened in January 2017, according to figures from the Corcoran Group, a large real estate firm. In Manhattan’s main business corridors, from 60th Street south, the benefit of being near a subway adds $3.85 per square foot to the value of commercial property, according to calculations by two New York University economists.

The notion that property owners should pay extra for their proximity to the subway is called “value capture” and has long been debated in urban planning circles. Now Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, has made value capture a prominent part of his plan to salvage the subway system by proposing to give the Metropolitan Transportation Authority the power to designate “transit improvement subdistricts” and impose taxes.

The plan’s final contours are a long way off and would need legislative approval. But at a moment when the subway is facing its worst crisis in decades, there is a growing consensus that property owners should shoulder more of the cost of a subway system that has nourished their bottom lines.

Value capture is “the solution of the moment,” said Kathryn S. Wylde, president and chief executive of the Partnership for New York City, an influential group of business leaders. And Thomas K. Wright, president of the Regional Plan Association, an urban policy organization, called value capture an “innovative financing mechanism” that New York is missing out on, even as the subway “is making some people very, very wealthy without paying into the system.”

The governor’s proposal has opened yet another front in his continuing war with Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat whose aides maintain that Cuomo’s value capture plan would commandeer the process of setting property taxes, a paramount responsibility of the city. They said state officials never discussed the proposal with the city. “This is not the way to address the problems of the MTA,” the first deputy mayor, Dean Fuleihan, said.

Michael Slattery, senior vice president of research for the Real Estate Board of New York, which represents New York’s developers, said the proposal “raises serious questions that need to be evaluated, especially when it deals with a property tax system that we know already has serious problems.”

There is little dispute that access to public transit often results in higher real estate prices. Neighborhoods like trendy Williamsburg in Brooklyn would not have had a resurgence without the access provided by the L line, whose ridership grew at three times the rate of the system as a whole from 1998 to 2012 and which has benefited from an upgraded signal system that allows more trains to run.

The Cuomo proposal calls for before and after assessments in neighborhoods where a new transportation project, like the extension of a subway line, raises property values. Officials would determine the difference between the previous assessment and the new, higher one.

Of the tax on that difference, 75 percent would go to the transit agency and 25 percent to the city.

“It’s not going to pay in its entirety for the capital requirements for any one project,” said Patrick J. Foye, president of the transit authority, “but it could over years or decades provide significant new funding.”

Whether value capture could work, given the antagonism between City Hall and Albany, is an open question. Carl Weisbrod, who was named to the transit agency’s board by de Blasio and was chairman of the city’s Planning Commission from 2014 until early last year, said value capture demanded “close cooperation between the MTA and the city on a case-by-case basis.”

“To simply impose it on the city isn’t going to work,” he said.

State officials said an existing four-person review panel would have the power to veto proposals the city opposed — and one member is appointed to represent the city. Joseph J. Lhota, chairman of the transit agency, said that the panel “works under what I call U.N. Security Council rules,” meaning that if one of the members is against a project, “the entire proposal goes down.”

Some public transportation advocates have been calling for special property taxes for years, and the MTA raised the idea in December after a column by Jim Dwyer in The New York Times discussed the subway’s effect on real estate values.

As proposed, the governor’s value-capture plan would apply only to transit projects costing more than $100 million. It could not be used to pay for already completed projects, like the $4.4 billion segment of the Second Avenue subway. But it could raise money for future segments planned to extend that line north to 125th Street.

The proposal also listed other major projects that value capture could be applied to, including East Side Access, which will connect the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal, as well as the existing Metro-North and subway stations along 125th Street in Manhattan.

City officials maintain that including railroad projects is unfair because they largely benefit suburban commuters who would not be charged under the governor’s tax plan. Fuleihan, the first deputy mayor, said 70 percent of the revenue for the transit agency comes from the city through taxes and fares, but suburban commuters who use the subway once they arrive in the city pay nothing but the fare.

The governor’s proposal would allow the transit agency to establish districts around new projects for value capture that could extend as far as a mile from a station. But city officials scoffed, arguing that living a mile from a stop is too far to consider it a convenience.

What improved public transit can mean for a neighborhood is easy to see on the Upper East Side, which became a transit wasteland after elevated trains on Second and Third avenues were demolished more than 60 years ago. Until the Second Avenue subway opened, residents on the eastern edge of the neighborhood had to trudge blocks to squeeze onto the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 trains on Lexington Avenue, the nation’s most crowded subway line.

It’s all good, plus people love the way the stations look,” said Lydia H. Sussek, a senior global real estate adviser with the Corcoran Group. “I’ve sold new condos as a result of it, and I had a couple who moved to East End Avenue knowing they’d have transportation, whereas before people never would have looked east.”

Christian Moulin, a co-op owner who has lived on East 85th Street between York Avenue and East End Avenue for 17 years, said the Upper East Side used to be “the less expensive place — rents were reasonable.”

“That’s changing,” he added, “and it’s all because of the subway.”

He said one indication was that flyers from brokers seeking apartments now appear in his and his neighbors’ mailboxes every couple of weeks. “We never had that before,” he said.

Beth Fisher, a senior managing director for the Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group, which is handling sales for three new apartment buildings north of East 86th Street, said the distance to the subway had long been “a metric for how people live” but that value capture put too much of an emphasis on the subway’s influence.

“The Second Avenue subway, sure, is the protagonist, the key driver of value,” she said. “But it is not the only driver. It ought not be singled out in that manner.”

Value capture is a familiar concept outside New York and has been used as a way to fund transit projects in other cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle, London and Hong Kong. In New York, Wright, of the Regional Plan Association, called the Second Avenue subway “a lost opportunity” in terms of value capture.

The extension of the No. 7 line to the Far West Side of Manhattan was financed by what amounted to value capture on Hudson Yards, the megaproject near the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Under de Blasio’s predecessor, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the city took the unusual step of offering to pay the $1.8 billion cost of the extension based on anticipated tax revenues.

But Wright cautioned that value capture in already developed neighborhoods would be more modest.

“In developed areas — say, the Upper East Side where you’re not looking at new virgin development on a rail yard, what you’re talking about is increased values of buildings,” he said. “The New York property tax system is such that that’s not going to generate short-term and immediate returns.”

crypto raid location

Four armed robbers broke into Danny Aston and Amy Jay's home in Moulsford, Oxfordshire, and forced the traders to digitally transfer their bitcoin.

  • Four robbers broke into a home in the Oxfordshire countryside last week.
  • They held traders Danny Aston and Amy Jay at gunpoint, reports say.
  • The pair was reportedly forced to make transfers.

Two bitcoin traders were robbed at gunpoint at their home in rural England when armed criminals forced them to carry out cryptocurrency transfers.

Danny Aston and his girlfriend Amy Jay, who jointly run a cryptocurrency trading company, were forced to digitally transfer bitcoin by four men who broke into their house in Moulsford, Oxfordshire, The Mail on Sunday newspaper reported.

The balaclava-clad assailants jumped over a fence, kicked down a door, and left the couple's baby outside in a pram as they forced the traders to transfer their bitcoin on a computer, the paper said.

Crime involving firearms is rare in the UK, especially outside of London, and usually associated with organised criminals.

The incident took place on January 22, but was first reported almost a week later. It's unclear how much the couple was forced to hand over.

Nobody was seriously injured, a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police told Business Insider. Police are still looking for the robbers.

Aston traded cryptocurrency online under the pseudonym "Goldiath," the Mail said. According to The Times newspaper, he has carried out more than 100,000 cryptocurrency trades with more than 16,300 different accounts, and offers trading tips and analysis online.

Police are trying to figure out how the robbers found the two brokers. They believe that the raid was targeted.

The Times reported that some of Aston's clients referred to him by his real name, which may have helped thieves identify him and find his home.

Aston and Jay are registered as directors of Aston Digital Currencies, a company incorporated last June, on Companies House. Their home address is listed on the online registry.

The couple, who have a baby, have been staying with relatives since the break-in, The Mail on Sunday quoted neighbours as saying.

While Monday's raid is believed to be Britain's first bitcoin heist, it's not the first in the world: Bitcoin traders and owners have been stabbed, kidnapped, and held at gunpoint, and forced to hand over their cryptocurrency, in cities including Vancouver, New York City, Istanbul, and Kiev, the Daily Beast reported.

A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman told Business Insider:

"Thames Valley Police is investigating an aggravated burglary which occurred at a property in Moulsford on Monday (22/1).

"Officers were called at about 9:40 a.m. to a report that offenders had entered a residential property off Reading Road and threatened the occupants. No one was seriously injured during the incident. [...]

"People in the local community may notice an increased presence of officers in the area while our enquiries are ongoing. The investigation is in its early stages however initial enquiries suggest this may be a targeted incident.

"No arrests have been made at this stage."

Rihanna performs at the 60th annual Grammy Awards

Rihanna had a magical performance last night at the Grammys even though she almost had a wardrobe malfunction.

Rihanna gave it her all at last night's Grammys but guess what? She almost had a wardrobe malfunction while performing on stage.

The Barbados born music star was among the musicians who graced the stage at the 60th annual Grammy Awards which took place at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

She was performing the hit song 'Wild Thoughts' with DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller when her dress almost gave way. Looks like it must have been the intensity of the dance routine. Thank God, the singer did not have a wardrobe on music's biggest night.

Earlier in the evening, Rihanna accepted a Grammy for Best Rap/Song Collaboration with Kendrick Lamar.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Pastor Tunde Bakare. In 2011, they were running mates under the CPC

Bakare said there is a clear distinction between the Muhammadu Buhari he knew in 2011 and the one currently in Aso Rock.

Former presidential candidate and senior pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare says President Muhammadu Buhari administration has been a disappointment.

He said the APC-led government has dashed the hopes of Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels TV on Sunday, January 28, 2018, Bakare, who ran with Buhari as a vice presidential candidate in 2011, said the person currently running the affairs of Nigeria is not the Buhari he knew.

He said, "no matter how you look at it, this is not the government we all hoped for. This is not what we thought the government that promised change in the beginning will perform so woefully. Any right thinking Nigerian will agree with that. They could have done better than what they have done so far. They themselves know that.

"I once did a video, 'The Buhari I know', and I meant every word I said in that video. I hope I will not be pushed to do a video of the Buhari I didn't know".

The man of God further said, "I had no reason at the time I ran with him to ever believe he was nepotic. There was no reason because he did say to me he will assembly the best and the brightest from the East, West, North and South of our country to fix the nation. But when I read what Obasanjo wrote, and I saw the list of key appointments made, one would begin to think whether they just put the things on his tabel to sign or is this just what he did deliberately. That is food for thought".

About two weeks back, Bakare announced that God instructed him to run president but he did not specify whether he would run in 2019.

Tunde Bakare also spoke about the letter written by the former president Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday January 23, 2018, where he accused Buhari of nepotism, urging him not to seek re-election in 2019.

Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods continued his comeback at the weekend, but his final round was spoiled by a loud fan.

Woods completed his best PGA Tour finish in 30 months on Sunday, but he missed a putt in the final round when a fan screamed at him on the 13th green.

Woods lined up the putt, addressed the ball and, just before he was to make contact with the ball, a loud fan yelled: "Get in the hole!"

The noise was enough to startle Woods who pushed the putt wide of the hole.

You can watch the putt right here:

In golf, it is frowned on to make noise or talk while a golfer takes a shot. To yell while a player takes his swing is therefore the height of poor spectator etiquette.

After the fan screamed at Woods, somebody — perhaps Woods himself — can be heard saying "come on, man."

Had Woods holed the initial putt, he would have scored a birdie (a 4 on the par 5). However, the miss ensured he carded a par 5.

Woods finished the round even, on 72, and scored a total of -3 for the four day event.

"It was tough conditions out there, it was tough scoring," Woods told the PGA Tour website. He added that he was "very pleased" with his week's work.

"After not playing for a couple of years and coming out here on the tour and playing a solid four days. I fought hard for these scores, they weren’t drive down the middle, hit it on the green and two-putt. This was a lot of putting."

Woods finished the event tied in 23rd place.
