An alleged drunk driver crashed his luxury Mercedes through a metre-high sandstone wall and into a cemetery in Sydney, police said Tuesday.
Police said they were investigating the crash that took place early Tuesday at Randwick Cemetery in South Coogee, located on the Pacific coast in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Photos showed the car in its final resting place more than five metres inside the cemetery, upside down on a grave, amid at least a dozen damaged tombstones.
Police said they believed the man was intoxicated because a roadside breath test suggested he was above the legal alcohol limit.
He suffered injuries to his face and abdomen and was taken to a local hospital where he was in a stable condition and under police guard.
The 49-year-old man was driving alone, local media reported.
The alleged drunk driver was travelling at a high speed and was “exceptionally lucky” to be alive, police inspector, Michael Merrett, told reporters at the cemetery on Tuesday.
The damage to the cemetery is “significant” and it “won’t be a cheap undertaking in terms of repairing,” Merrett said.
“Some of these graves are quite old,” he added.
The 3.5-hectare South Coogee cemetery has been in operation since 1874. It is owned and operated by the local council, but contains no plots or vaults for sale currently.
It contains a number of graves of historical significance to the local area, the council says.
